3-Day First-Timer Route

Three days is enough for the core of central Tokyo if you don't try to zigzag across the city each day. This route groups districts by geography, not by importance.

3-Day First-Timer Route
Day 1 — East Tokyo, old city
  • Morning: Senso-ji and Nakamise-dori in Asakusa, before the crowds
  • Midday: River cruise or short ride to Odaiba for a change of pace
  • Afternoon: Ueno Park — pick one museum rather than several
  • Evening: Ameyoko market for street food
Day 2 — West Tokyo, the skyline
  • Morning: Meiji Shrine, then Takeshita-dori in Harajuku
  • Midday: Walk Omotesando toward Shibuya
  • Afternoon: Shibuya Crossing and Shibuya Sky
  • Evening: Shinjuku — Omoide Yokocho for dinner, government building observation deck if it's still open
Day 3 — Culture and a slower pace
  • Morning: Ginza, especially if it's a weekend car-free afternoon
  • Midday: Tsukiji Outer Market for lunch
  • Afternoon: Roppongi Hills or the National Art Center, depending on current exhibitions
  • Evening: Free — revisit whichever district you liked most
