Akihabara built its reputation on post-war electronics shops and has layered anime, manga, gaming, and idol culture on top over the decades. The main street closes to cars on weekend afternoons. Most of what's interesting here is vertical — individual buildings stack unrelated specialty shops floor by floor, so the appeal is in exploring up rather than along the street.
